What is a Plant Based Diet?

A plant based diet is a diet that is based on, and consists mostly of, food derived from plants. This includes vegetables, fruit, legumes, nuts, whole grains, and beans. Plant based does not mean plant exclusive. It simply means a diet that encourages a large consumption of foods that are not derived from animals. The Mediterranean Diet, with its emphasis on whole grains, vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, and legumes is considered a plant based diet.

Why would someone eat this way?

There are so many reasons!

  1. The health benefits are vast and impressive. From a health perspective, a plant based diet like the Mediterranean Diet can reduce your risk for all kinds of chronic diseases and conditions, including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and cognitive decline.   2. The high fiber and water content of all that produce play a key role in reaching and maintaining weight loss goals. Research backs up that people on a plant-based diet tend to lose more weight (this study shows up to twice as much).
  3. It’s also great for planet earth. People who eat mostly plants tend to have smaller carbon footprints, according to this research.

How do I transition?
